Paradise Blue Pits Urban Development Against Heart and Soul – Check It Out on October 6th

The True Colors Theatre Company reflects a promise to search for truth and clarity through theatre. Join the troupe at Southwest Arts Center on October 6th for Paradise Blue!

It’s 1949, and the new mayor of Detroit is working to get rid of the blight of the city—and to move African Americans out of Detroit’s Black Bottom. Blue, a gifted trumpeter, considers selling his once-thriving family jazz club, leaving his beloved Pumpkin and her dreams aside. As Blue fights personal demons to better his life and maintains his sanity, his fellow band members, Corn, and P-Sam, are stuck wondering where they fit into the plan to benefit from the changes in their neighborhood. Silver, a mysterious woman with a history, enters the scene with her own plans, turning the lives of everyone upside down.

Set against a backdrop of gentrification and displacement, Paradise Blue encompasses the pain and suffering that accompany history. After the play, guests can stick around for a moderated post-show conversation with the cast. This is your chance to ask the cast your questions and hear stories relating to the production.

True Colors Theatre Company intends to be an important voice in the American discussion of diversity, supporting and propelling individuals and institutions in their quest for understanding. Operationally, the company will strive to remain fiscally sound and small enough that every individual who works there can be heard, be accountable, get better at what they do, and live out True Colors’ core values.

In 2001, Fulton County opened its doors to the Southwest Arts Center, the first facility built by Fulton County solely for the arts. Located on a 27-acre campus in the quiet Cascade community, Southwest Arts Center is dedicated to providing quality arts instruction and programs in a positive and creative environment. The facility features a classroom space, built specifically for arts instruction, visual art exhibition programming, and staged performances in the Black Box Theater.
