You Can Declutter Your Closet By Following These Simple Tips

Do you know what we love? A clean closet. In our times such as these, the last thing anyone needs is for their home life to be stressed and cluttered. One of the easiest and most impactful places to start is decluttering your closet. To help you reach a level of organized that you’ve never experienced, we suggest starting with our quick tips!

Start with a Purge.

The first step to getting your closets in order is assessing what's inside and getting rid of anything you don't need or use immediately. "The most important step is to let go of the items that do not spark joy for you first—you will be amazed by how much less you have to store after that first step," says organizing expert Marie Kondo. You can start this step by taking everything out of your closet –trust us, it will already feel like a fresh start.

Organize Your Items by Type and Color.

Now, it's time to put everything back. Arrange your clothing, shoes, and accessories by color and type, making sure to keep your frequently worn items in the most accessible spot. The best method to organize your clothes are by item and color. For example, red pants, blue pants, and black pants followed by red shirts, blue shirts, and black shirts. Just make sure to space all of your clothing evenly apart.

Keep Knits Folded.

To keep your sweaters looking their best, always fold and stack them on a shelf or drawer. "If you hang a sweater, you'll end up with distortion from the hangers,” warns Gwen Whiting of The Laundress. So, it’s best to take them directly from the dryer, fold them, and place them in their designated spots. It’s a lot easier than concerning yourself with the process of finding available hangers, then hanging the clothes themselves.

Maintain Your Organized Closet.

Now that you've tackled a major closet cleanse, don't let all that work go to waste. To keep your racks airy and organized, quick check-in every month to make sure things are in order. One tip that we find helpful is hanging a sturdy, extra-large tote bag or pretty wicker basket in a central location and let it serve as a collection bin for clothes, housewares, toys, and other items that you decide to give away throughout the years, so no more big purges are needed!
