On Tuesday, April 30th, critically-acclaimed Atlanta singer Virginia Schenck will join the annual International Jazz Day celebration as the Atlanta host with a special concert at City Winery. Schenck's show is one of the thousands of International Jazz Day 2019 events taking place in over 190 countries around the globe. Virginia Schenck, known by the stage name VA, is an accomplished jazz performer and vocalist who utilizes both straight-ahead and free improvisation. Schenck has studied and performed music since her childhood, but in 2007, she renewed her commitment to singing full-time. Under her stage name, she has released three critically acclaimed albums, which showcase her artistry. She often spices up her shows with world music influences from her own vocal exploration and of CircleSinging, which she studied under legendary Bobby McFerrin.
Just this past December, she was honored to perform with McFerrin as part of his Atlanta CircleSongs concert. In addition to performing, Virginia was handpicked to put together the exclusive 12-voice ensemble that led McFerrin's CircleSongs for the concert. Receiving global airplay and performing regularly in Atlanta’s top jazz and music venues, VA’s recent appearances also include stops in New York and Seattle for a play with completely improvised music entitled The Gift.
Presented by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, #JazzDay brings jazz artists from around the globe together each year on April 30th to celebrate the power of jazz as a creative and cultural force. International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April.
